A rare 17th century oak metamorphic monk's chair / table, c.1620.
The two plank seat and arms both sit above bobbin supports. The three plank back sits on braces with removable pegs which operate as a mechanism for the back to be tilted forward, turning the chair into a table. There are three peg holes in each arm for the table to be adjusted if needed. There is a small loss to the wood on one of the braces but this is purely aesthetic and does not impact the mechanism in anyway (please see photographs). The stretchers show evidence of historic woodworm but remain intact. The piece continues to function perfectly as a chair and/or table.
The oak throughout is glowing and tactile; a stunning patina built up through 400 years.
A truly special piece.
