A large mid-19th century portrait of a gentleman in a gilt frame. English School. Oil on canvas. 'Fred Keetch' is inscribed verso with the reference number 'T1350', likely for the Fred Keetch Gallery, Exeter (now of Exmouth), Devon.
The subject is a well-dressed gentleman of middle age dressed in a black suit, white shirt and seated in a red reading chair. The body is loosely painted, however the face and neck show more attention to detail with the face in particular showing wonderful verve. There is some evidence of historic repair/restoration in areas (please see photographs).
The whole is housed in a period gilt frame which shows some signs of wear commensurate with age but generally remains in a good attractive condition and ready to hang.
