A George III Irish red leather government despatch box belonging to the Auditor General's Office.
The box is gilt stamped with the George III cypher to the corners, with a gilt stamped Gaelic harp to the centre above the words 'Auditor General's Office'. The box has its original brass handle and escutcheon. The deep red Moroccan leather has wonderful patination throughout and has various historic patch repairs throughout, indicating both heavy use and reliance.
The lid opens to reveal the original interior marbled paper lining. A wood stretch split is evident to the interior base but remains stable.
An extremely attractive and scarce piece.
