A fine 18th century oil on canvas by a follower of Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668), Dutch School. The work bears striking similarities to Wouwerman's 'The Departure Of The Riders' and 'The Cavalry Camp'.
Philips Wouwerman was one of the most versatile and prolific artists of the Dutch Golden Age. Embedded in the artistic environment and tradition of his home town of Haarlem, Wouwerman made an important and highly influential contribution to the canon of seventeenth-century Dutch painting. His pictures were in demand during his lifetime, and even more sought after in the 18th century. Throughout Europe, formerly princely art collections like in Dresden and St. Petersburg still bear witness to this widespread admiration of Wouwerman's art.
This 18th century work depicts finely painted horses, riders, dogs and women to the foreground, with a lake and large military camp extending into the background, all beneath a golden-hour clouded sky. The sense of scale and use of colour in this work is quite remarkable.
The work has undergone sympathetic restoration and re-lining. Craquelure remains evident throughout upon inspection, predominantly to the sky, and there is one small area of paint loss amongst the branches of the tree (please see photograph).
The work is housed in an ornate gesso frame of the correct period which bears some minor losses commensurate with age but remains in a good attractive condition overall.
