A compelling self-portrait by Carlton Alfred Smith (1853-1946). The work is signed 'Carlton A. Smith' verso, along with the words 'Self Portrait' to the top left verso. Oil on canvas.
The work is extremely well executed with the sitter gazing out of the canvas as if looking at himself in a mirror. The artist has painted the work in such a way that the eyes of the portrait follow the viewer across a room. The face shows meticulous attention to detail with the body being more loosely painted. The whole is framed in a later white fabric and gilt wood frame which compliments the black and white of the sitter's clothing.
There is a small area of paint loss to the lower left corner and a small protrusion the upper right of the canvas but generally the work itself remains in a very good condition throughout. The frame shows some small areas wear commensurate with age with some age tone to the fabric in places upon close inspection and a few small knocks to the extremities.
An extremely striking work.
