A rare collection of three signed original ink and watercolour comic hunting illustrations by Charles Edmund Brock (1870-1938), housed within ebonised frames, c.1900.

One is untitled, the remaining two are titled:

  • 'Left Behind No Wonder!'
  • 'Starting for the Drag'

Brock received his first book commission at the age of 20 in 1890. He became very successful, and illustrated books for authors such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Jonathan Swift, William Thackeray and George Eliot. Brock also contributed pieces to several magazines such as The Quiver, The Strand and Pearsons. In illustration, Brock is best known for his line work, initially working in the tradition of Hugh Thomson, but he was also a skilled colourist.

All of the illustrations in this collection remain in an excellent condition. The ebonised frames show some wear to the extremities commensurate with age but remain attractive.
