A charming and highly sought after late 19th century Black Forest tobacco jar of large proportions, finely carved in the form of a terrier's head, complete with large glass eyes and removable black forest pipe.
The jar boasts exceptional detail with finely carved fur, shirt collar, bow tie and hat, the latter of which lifts to reveal a hollow for tobacco within. There is an historic loss to each side of the moustache but these are well worn, symmetrical and do not detract from the look of the piece as a whole. The pipe is of a proportionate size to the jar and shows signs of wear commensurate with age. The underside of the jar has '5p' inscribed in ink.
