A finely carved 17th century oak coffer of good proportions.
The three panel front boasts a deeply carved rampant lion to the central panel with two intricately carved foliate designs to the left and right. The panels are divided with a large flower, its head flanking the escutcheon and heavily leafed stem descending. Each border is heavily decorated, the gadrooned edge of the lid rather charmingly remaining unfinished. The carvings are likely later, circa. 19th century, as is the fantastic gothic escutcheon which is in the form of a mythical creature with its mouth agape. Later but historic hinges.
Wear commensurate with age in places as is to be expected in a piece of this age, but generally the coffer is in a very good solid condition and highly attractive.
