A pair of exceptional 19th century pastel portraits of large proportions, one of which is signed 'J. W. Walton, 1890'. The works are possibly attributable to the circle of John Whitehead Walton given similarity in style, most notably in the depiction of the eyes, however John Whitehead Walton was not known to use pastel medium.
The portrait of a suited gentleman is signed and dated. The work has one small area of damage (please see photographs) but otherwise remains in a very good condition and remains striking. The portrait of a well dressed lady is unsigned but of equal quality with exceptional detail to the dress in particular. Both portraits are of the exact same proportion and are housed in matching later gilt frames.
