A charming scarce Victorian Farmers Arms mug, produced by Wood & Hulme 1882-1905. This example likely dates c.1885.
The passage reads:
Let the wealthy and great
Roll in splendour and state
I envy them not I declare it
I eat my own lamb
My own chickens and ham
I shear my own fleece and wear it
I have lawns I have bowers
I have fruits I have flowers
The lark is my Morning alarmer
So my jolly boys now
Heres God speed the plough
Long life and success to the farmer
The opposite side of the mug boasts numerous illustrations associated with farming to include hay, a plough, cattle and a lady churning butter to name but a few. The inside rim is adorned with corn and leaves.
There is some very light crazing to the glaze in areas but otherwise the mug remains in an excellent condition throughout with no chips or cracks. The maker's mark remains clearly visible to the base.
A lovely example of an increasingly scarce piece.
