A 19th century oil on board painting of small proportions, depicting Romeo & Juliet on the balcony after a theatrical lithograph advertising a performance of the play, c.1879. The original lithograph is currently part of the Theatrical Poster Collection at the Library of Congress, Washington DC, USA (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Romeo_%26_Juliet_LCCN2014636010.jpg).
The painting is housed in a gilt glazed frame.
The oil is finely painted with a wonderful iridescence to Juliet's dress in particular. The gilt frame shows wear but arguably adds character to the painting giving the appearance of a window frame through which one is viewing the scene.
A charming and very attractive work.
