A stunning 19th century gilt bronze inkwell of large proportions, c.1860.
The inkwell is substantial, surmounted by a large finely cast recumbent hound, possibly a lurcher or deerhound, with crossed paws. The dog lays atop an oval cushion form flanked by two ram heads, all supported by four detailed monopedic lions.
The lid lifts to reveal two original ink pots and a square vacancy to the centre for an inkwell. One of the ink pots has nibbles to its extremities (please see photographs).
There are some small areas of tarnish to the base but overall the inkwell remains in a very good clean condition.
A striking piece.
