A very attractive George III sterling silver wine coaster, assayed for London. The maker's mark and hallmarks are rubbed, however the crowned lion assay remains visible, dating the piece no later than 1821. The earliest coasters generally started to appear c.1760, thus this piece can be relatively accurately dated to George III period.
The coaster boasts fretted sterling silver sides with a silver cabochon boss to the centre. A square cartouche with the letter 'R' sits front centre. There is a very small area of damage to the silver at the base near the hallmarks (please see photographs), otherwise the coaster remains in an excellent condition throughout.
A very attractive piece of Georgian silver tableware.
