An extremely attractive George III Chippendale period mahogany chest on chest with working locks and key which boasts a projecting dental cornice over a fine blind fretwork frieze and canted corners.
There is a label for 'Greenwood & Sons Ltd, 10, Royal Parade, Harrogate' to the underside of one of the drawers - a firm which included Queen Mary among their patrons.
William Francis Greenwood & Sons were established in the 19th century as furniture makers in York - they suggest that they were established in 1829 in their advertisements. They had a branch at 86 Newbrough Street, and at 26 Huntriss Row, Scarborough by 1880, when they described themselves as 'Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer, Dealers in Ancient Furniture, Works of Art, Old China, Bronzes and Curiosities'; they relinquished their Scarbrough business in 1890 and in the 1890s the business opened a branch at 112 New Bond Street, London. The firm also had a branch in Lord Street, Southport, in the 1890s.
By the early 1900s the business had branches in York and Harrogate; they owned the well-known 'Tudor House' in Stonegate (now number 33 Stonegate), York during the early 20th century, which was set up as a series of period rooms with antiques for sale (please see photographs for an illustration of the same).
There are two short drawers over six long graduated drawers, each with cast gilt metal cartouche escutcheons and handles.
The chest shows some wear throughout commensurate with age. There are honest repairs to the sides of the upper chest and bracket feet, and small veneer repairs to three drawers fronts (please see photographs).
A lovely looking piece of very good proportions and colour.
