A 19th century oil on panel depicting a bearded sage by a follower of Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich. An illegible pencil inscription can be found verso.
The work depicts a seated, elderly sage deep in thought. The use of light is well done, with the subject's face emerging from the surrounding darkness, presumably lit by a candle on a nearby table.
The work is housed in later gilt frame which has signs of wear and touching up to the gilt in areas.
A handsome and intriguing work.
