This is a very fine 19th century leather despatch box, previously the property of Henry Gore Wright (1819-1888). This despatch was the sole load and responsibility of H. G. Wright's personal assistant during a tour of Shahpur, India.

Henry Gore Wright was the youngest son of Nathaniel Wright, Indigo Planter (Bengal), and the youngest brother of W. M. Webster Wright; the previous owner's grandfather. Hand-written labels by W. M. Webster Wright's grandaughter detailing the box's history remain inside.

The despatch box is of exceptional quality, fully bound with tan leather, blind stamped decoration to the front, brass clasps and 'Secure A.W Patent Lever' lock. Note the lock does not click shut, but does remain closed when the clasp lever is down and remains closed whilst being carried.

The box opens to reveal a full green leather interior with gilt stamped decoration and numerous leather pockets. Undoing the leather straps to the top of the interior reveals a secret compartment, again in full green leather, with an expanding document holder.

The box remains in an entirely original conditions, and retains some stationary items to include a bone letter opener and nibs.
