A stunning walnut and coromandel writing slope by Betjemann & Sons, retailed by F. Pritty, Argyle Street, Glasgow. F. Pritty are documented to have had a premises on Argyle Street, Glasgow between 1875-1876 which accurately dates this slope to within that period.
The box boasts engraved gilt brass decoration and working lock and key to the lid. The lid opens to reveal a Coromandel veneered interior with further gilt brass detailing, compartments, glass inkwells and a blue and gilt stamped slope. 'Betjemann & Sons London' is stamped to the internal lock. The slope pull-tab is absent but can still be raised using the remaining recess. When opened, an interior compartment is revealed and a small brass inset retailer plaque for 'F. Pritty, Argyle Street, Glasgow'. Original baize lining to underside.
The box has a small amount of wear commensurate with age, most notably the absent pull tab and wear to the baize base but overall the whole remains functional and attractive.
