A charming portrait by Alexander Strahan Buchanan (1870-1956), of his son Alexander Norman Buchanan (1910-2004). Alexander Norman Buchanan went on to become an artist in his own right and resided in Oxfordshire. There was a large studio sale of his personal collection in 2005 following his death. This work has a hand-written label identifying the subject signed 'A. N. Buchanan', together with the label of an Oxford-based framer. It is therefore probable that this work formed part of his private collection auctioned in 2005.
Alexander Strahan Buchanan (1870-1956) was a London painter who exhibited between 1902 and 1914. As his son was born in 1910, this work would have been painted c.1913. It is a wonderfully delicate work with great use of colour and light.
The work is housed in a later gilt wood frame which has some light signs of wear but generally remains attractive.
