The work depicts an intriguing subject, which is well executed and has real character. The rain and sea have been painted with great verve, such that the painting seems almost to move.
The glossy varnish has darkened but the subject remains clearly visible. When held to the light, there appears to be small flecks of gilt paint to the varnish to the lower half of the work. There are some minor paint losses to the extremities of the board, indicative of having been within a slightly smaller frame previously. The work is housed in a period gilt frame which has some small losses to the extremities but remains good overall .
A well executed work of unusual and compelling subject.
