A stunning East Anglian fruitwood and ash 'Button Back' armchair of unusual form with rush seat, c.1800-1830.

The high backed chair has three turned spheres (or 'buttons') to the top rail; the button back design was a dominant design feature in country chairs from the East Anglian region. The back also has a single turned cross splat, usually found in country chairs from the Oxfordshire region but also known in East Anglian examples. The narrow ring turning incorporated into the underarm supports is a typical turnery signature from the East Anglian region, and the whole is raised upon four turned legs and front rail with wide stay rails, also typical of turner-made chairs in the East Anglian region c.1790-1830.

The chair has a little movement in the joints and evidence of historic repairs in areas (most notably the screw repair to the left hand rest). Overall the chair remains extremely attractive, functional and displays well.
