A pair of oils on boards depicting a snowy barn at dusk and a moonlit woodland scene. Both by the same hand. Both illegibly signed. The date of '1838' is just legible to the lower right of the barn scene.
Both works are extremely well done with the artist displaying real skill in their depiction of light. In the barn scene in particular, the artist has used thickly applied paint and brush strokes to provide an almost three dimensional depiction of the thatched barn roof and straw in the wheelbarrow, giving the viewer a real sense of texture and depth.
The woodland scene at first glance appears dark and atmospheric but at a closer look, the viewer is treated to an extremely joyful dog bounding behind his master as he collects sticks under moonlight.
A truly delightful pair of works.
