'The History Of The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire' by Edward Gibbon. New edition complete in eight volumes, published 1838. Frontispiece to Volume I and folding maps to Volumes I and V (note the Volume I map is detached but remains neatly folded and fully intact).

Edward Gibbon's 'History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire' (1776-88) is among the most magnificent and ambitious narratives in European literature. Its subject is the fate of one of the world's greatest civilisations over thirteen centuries - its rulers, wars and society, and the events that led to its disastrous collapse.

Each volume is finely bound in tan calf leather with red leather title panels, green leather volume panels and marbled boards. The volumes show some light shelf wear to the extremities but remain in a very good condition indeed overall.

An extremely handsome set.
