'Travels In North America In The Years 1827 and 1828' by Captain Basil Hall, published in Edinburgh, 1830. Each volume bears a dedication to the title page reading, 'From The Earl Of Leitrim to George B West Esq. 1834'.
George Beatty West, born circa 1786, was a solicitor living at Drumdarkin House, Co Leitrim and was appointed a JP in 1824. The Earl of Leitrim in 1834 was Nathaniel Clements, the 2nd Earl of Co Leitrim and father of William Clements (known as Viscount Clements), an Anglo-Irish nobleman and landlord notorious in Irish history for his mistreatment of tenants during the famine. He succeeded his father as Earl in 1854 and was assassinated in the north of County Donegal in Ireland in April 1878.
The National Library of Ireland has two letters from the Earl of Leitrim to George B. West, 1838-1840, also eight letters from Viscount Clements to West with mention of agrarian crimes, and an assassination attempt on him, 1846-1861.
The set itself is complete in three volumes, each fully bound in tan calf leather with gilt borders. The spine has gilt stamped titling and five raised bands. All volumes remain in a very good condition.
