A delightful portrait of 'Jean Bryce or Crawford (1764-1823)', likely Scottish school.
The sitter is to the left of the canvas wearing a blue dress adorned with pearls, a pearl necklace and a white scarf in her hair. She is rather modestly donning a pink shawl around her arms. The sitter's expression together with her placement in the canvas gives the whole work a melancholic air.
The work has been made a fit a smaller frame historically with those crease lines still evident. There is some looseness in the canvas where the work has been brought back to its full size (again apparently some time ago when one looks verso) which will require re-stretching to remedy. The work has craquelure throughout and the varnish would be benefit from a clean. Nonetheless, she displays wonderfully.
